Company's New Commercial Line Ideal for Public Projects

VENICE, Fla. -- Helping to rebuild a stronger and safer Louisiana, PGT has partnered with local businesses, LaPlace Glass Works and DeGeorge Glass, to provide new windows with hurricane protection for two public schools in Terrebonne Parish damaged during Hurricane Katrina. The destruction that followed Katrina sent 90 percent or 600,000 of Louisiana's enrolled students out of the city. Parents are enrolling students at a rate of about 100 per week, with at least 36,000 expected by fall at the peak of hurricane season.

"We are tremendously proud to be part of this rebuilding effort," said Rod Hershberger, PGT President and Chief Executive Officer. "It's a top priority for the Louisiana community to get their schools up and running, but they also realize it is important to make sure the schools are safe." According to industry experts, rebuilding homes or businesses after a disaster is the right time to incorporate techniques to prevent future disaster damages. Both Lacache Middle School in Chauvin and Schriever Elementary School in Schriever will be retrofitted with PGT([R]) Architectural Systems Series 3000 with impact-resistant glass.

The 2007 Atlantic Hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30. The NOAA Climate Prediction Center has stated there is a 75 percent chance that the season will be above normal and has forecasted 13 to 17 named storms, seven to 10 hurricanes and three to five major hurricanes to make landfall. "School board members and Merlin Lirette of Merlin Group Ltd are to be commended for taking preemptive measures to protect the lives of students and reduce the loss of property," said Harold DeGruy, President, LaPlace Glass Works. "By outfitting the schools with impact-resistant glass, you significantly reduce the chance of the roof blowing off during a catastrophic event, which would result in loss of school facilities. With the addition of opening protection you increase the structural integrity of the building; the schools also are better equipped to serve as community shelters during hazardous weather events," according to Lynda F. The impact-resistant technology in PGT's products combines heavy-duty aluminum frames with impact-resistant laminated glass. A special silicone glazing process helps keep the glass from breaking away from the frame. Laminated glass is constructed by bonding a tough polyvinylbutyral (PVB) interlayer between two pieces of glass under heat and pressure. Once sealed, the glass "sandwich" behaves as a single unit and is transparent, like ordinary glass. PGT's custom made impact-resistant products include PGT Architectural Systems Series 3000 with impact-resistant glass for high-rise and commercial buildings, and WinGuard([R]) Impact-Resistant Windows and Doors, the nation's best selling brand of residential, impact-resistant products.

PGT also has partnered with Norandex to renovate the luxury apartment complex, Esplanade at City Park. The Esplanade is located near the heart of downtown New Orleans, overlooking the St. John Bayou and experienced moderate damage due to Hurricane Katrina. In an effort to meet the strict guidelines in the 2006 IBC, the Esplanade at City Park will be replacing 1,600 windows with PGT's Architectural Systems Series 3000.
