PFIZER-ENDOWED CHAIR AT DUKE UNIVERSITY WILL HONOR EDMUND T. PRATT JR.
 NEW YORK, Jan. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Pfizer Inc (NYSE: PFE) announced today that it is renaming the Pfizer Professorship Fund at Duke University the Pfizer Inc -- Edmund T. Pratt Jr. University Professorship in honor of the company's retiring chairman.
 Pratt, whose 28-year career at Pfizer ends March 1, received a B.S. degree in electrical engineering in 1947 from Duke where he was graduated magna cum laude and elected to Phi Beta Kappa.
 The Professorship Fund, endowed by Pfizer for several years, designates a distinguished scholar to pursue multidisciplinary work among undergraduate and graduate students. The first appointment will be to the School of Engineering.
 Duke President H. Keith H. Brodie said: "It is a pleasure to join with Pfizer in honoring Mr. Pratt by means of the Pfizer Inc -- Edmund T. Pratt Jr. University Professorship at Duke. We have appreciated his dedicated service on our visiting committees and board of trustees for many years and count him among our most distinguished alumni.
 "It is fitting that through this chair, Mr. Pratt and Pfizer will provide lasting encouragement to future scholars committed to academic excellence in multidisciplinary endeavors."
 Pfizer's Chief Executive Officer William C. Steere Jr., said: "This tribute is intended to acknowledge the remarkable leadership Mr. Pratt has provided not only to our company and industry, but also to the entire American business community. His contributions in business management and civic leadership have been extraordinary and widely recognized."
 Following graduation from Duke, Pratt received an M.B.A. from the Wharton School in 1949. He began his Pfizer career in 1964 as controller after serving with IBM Corporation and as assistant secretary of the Army for financial management. He moved to Pfizer International in 1967 where he served as chairman of the board and president. He became president of Pfizer in 1971 and chairman and chief executive officer in 1972.
 Pratt, who will continue as a director of Pfizer, is also director of General Motors Corporation, International Paper Company, The Chase Manhattan Corporation, and The Chase Manhattan Bank, N.A. He is past chairman of The Business Roundtable as well as a past chairman of the President's Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations and the Emergency Committee for American Trade. A member of the Business Council, Pratt is also past chairman of Gov. Mario Cuomo's Business Advisory Board and a member of the boards of the New York Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the New York City Partnership.
