 treats and not tricks. -0-
-- Cancel the candy! -- For pets, chocolate is a tasty toxin when
eaten in large quantities. Make sure meal time comes before
trick-or-treat time -- Is Rex waiting for the candy to be thrown
into his mouth rather than the kids' candy bag? To avoid having a
pet be tempted by the abundance of candy on Halloween, feed all
     pets before the trick-or-treating
-- ID Pets before taking them trick-or treating -- One of the most
important things to consider if taking a pet trick-or-treating is
to make sure they are identified! Whether or not a dog needs a
license, the animal needs an ID tag with its owner's name and
     phone number on it.
-- Keep Lady Leashed -- If a dog or cat is going trick-or-treating
around the neighborhood, a leash is very important! Pets must be
kept under control. Nothing's more frightening than losing a pet
in a strange place, or having her dart into traffic.
-- Candy wrappers can be choking hazards -- With all the extra candy
in the house, it is probable that pets will get a hold of a
wrapper. When a pet gets into something that's supposed to be
off-limits, they are likely to swallow it whole. If possible,
pull the object out of the pet's mouth. (Be careful to avoid
being bitten.) If the object can't be removed, call the
veterinarian immediately; this is an emergency.
-- Establish pet-only areas in your home -- If expecting
trick-or-treaters, protect children or pets from unwanted contact
with each other. Establish a "dogs only" area where dogs are kept
away from sharp pokes and too-hearty thumps without resorting to
nips and growls of their own.
-- Boos and barking -- Pooches inclined to bark at the sound of the
doorbell will make Halloween a nightmare for their owners. Dogs
that are spooked by the doorbell regularly will be extra scared
by masked trick-or-treaters, so keep them beyond a gate or
     downstairs during the evening.
