PETsMART Selects Software Technologies ERP Integration to Link More Than 450 Retail Stores Nationwide.
PETsMART, One of SAP'S Largest Retail Accounts Worldwide, to Link
SAP, Legacy Applications With STC's Datagate Integration Technology
Software Technologies Corp. (STC), a leader in enterprise integration technology, Tuesday announced that PETsMART, a leading worldwide operator of superstores specializing in pet food, supplies and services, has standardized on the DataGate enterprise integration solution.
Based on transaction volume, PETsMART is one of SAP's largest retail accounts worldwide, and is a showcase account for STC ERP integration technology. DataGate will integrate more than 450 PETsMART stores nationwide, processing up to 6 million store-level transactions per day, and providing more than 100 transactional interfaces between SAP and 22 other distinct systems at its stores and corporate offices.
DataGate will initially orchestrate transactions between SAP and other critical systems such as warehousing, traffic, point-of-sale, credit card processing, payroll, space planning, data warehousing and store inventory management systems as well as supply chain and payment processing links.
The $1 million contract specifies copies of DataGate, STC's EDI DataGateWay interface for SAP R/3, Data Access and Retrieval Technology (DART), which provides links to Oracle and Informix, and legacy system DataGateways to link PETsMART's corporate office systems with retail stores nationwide.
DataGate will provide point-to-point connections, offering PETsMART an approximate 40 percent reduction in development and an 80 percent reduction in maintenance costs compared to more traditional interface development methods. With 99 percent system availability with DataGate, PETsMART also anticipates savings benefits with improved reliability.
"We're looking to streamline our business operations and reduce development and maintenance costs," said Jake Mendelsohn, chief information officer, PETsMART. "We chose the STC solution because it met or exceeded our expectations, delivered on the `return on integration' benefit promised, and offers advanced features and performance.
"Our biggest challenge in selecting a vendor was to find total integration, including uniting our legacy applications with the SAP environment, which is extremely complex. DataGate goes beyond typical integration products by offering us a complete integration architecture that will scale to our growth and accommodate changes in our IT environment," added Mendelsohn.
"PETsMART is a world-class STC application, and achieves the `return on integration' benefits we strive for in customer relationships," said James T. Demetriades, president, chairman and chief executive officer, STC.
"The business efficiencies being sought by many corporate enterprises today will continue as companies look to integration technology to help them develop leading-edge intranets and supply chain links, as well as reduce high development and maintenance costs and unacceptable downtime delays. More and more companies are discovering, as PETsMART did, that shrink-wrapped integration solutions and STC are a compelling choice," Demetriades added.
The PETsMART ERP application links legacy applications with numerous SAP and other applications. SAP applications linked include SAP Retail, SAP Financials, SAP Costing, SAP Asset Management, SAP Materials Management, and SAP Sales and Distribution Management; legacy applications include EXE (warehouse), Point-of-Sale (POS) and other enterprise applications including Oracle and Informix.
"A key interface is between our store systems and SAP," added Mendelsohn. "This is an extremely complex interface and, with our large transaction volume and short processing window, we need a robust and efficient interface engine.
"Through this interface we also collect store-level inventory movement information and transmit credit card processing information directly to our bank. This is the heart of our data communications environment and we look to STC to dramatically increase efficiency and reduce errors," concluded Mendelsohn.

"With links to popular ERP applications such as SAP, PeopleSoft, Oracle and SyBase, STC is aggressively moving to service the quickly growing ERP integration market," added Demetriades. "The PETsMART sales win confirms our expertise in the enterprise integration market, and demonstrates the value we can bring to large-enterprise customers."
