PETTEE, HOWELL LEAD HART BEHIND QUARTERBACK, RUNNING BACK, INDIANS FINISH SECOND IN FOOTHILL HART 37, SAUGUS 13.

Alex Pettee threw for a pair of touchdowns and Delano Howell rushed for three scores to lead Hart to a 37-13 win over Saugus in a Foothill League game Thursday night at College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation. .

With second place in league on the line, Hart (6-4, 3-1) led the entire game as Pettee completed 18 of 22 passes for 223 yards and no interceptions. Howell passed the 1,000-yard mark for the season with 137 yards on 21 carries.

The win means Hart, which entered as the seventh-ranked team in the CIF (1) (Common Intermediate Format) A standard video format used in videoconferencing. CIF formats are defined by their resolution, and standards both above and below the original resolution have been established. Saugus (5-5, 2-2) answered with a touchdown on its next drive, early in the second quarter. Ryan Zirbel broke free for a 46-yard run before being pushed out at the Hart 19.

On the next play, Nick Gauthier threw a touchdown pass to Mario Wright to cut the Indians lead to 14-7.

On the next play, Pettee was sacked by Jacob Gallegos for a loss back to the Hart 3. But on third down, Pettee threw a 35-yard pass to Arndt, spurring a drive that ended with a 22-yard field goal by Blake Mendenhall, extending Hart's lead to 17-7 late in the first half.

After a scoreless third quarter, Hart pushed the lead to 24-7 when Howell scored on a 1-yard run to cap a 9-play drive.

The score was his 30th touchdown of the season, which leads the Foothill League.

Saugus got its last score with 1:44 left as Gauthier threw a 22-yard scoring pass to Zirbel.

Hart leads the series against Saugus 26-4-1, and has won the past 15 meetings. The last time Saugus defeated Hart was in 1991, when both teams were in the Golden League.
