Celebration of it began during the American Revolution.  celebrations, said Frank R. ``While fireworks are illegal in most communities in Los Angeles County and firecrackers are illegal throughout the county, impromptu Fourth of July celebrations can be dangerous to dogs and cats,'' Andrews said.

The Fourth of July can be a time of terror for pets, as animals can become frightened and disoriented dis·o·ri·ent

``Dogs and cats can run away from their homes in a panic because of the noise and confusion caused by fireworks,'' Andrews warned. ``Every year, our animal control officers pick up scores of stray pets that have fled because of the noise and confusion caused by the Fourth of July.

``The best thing you can do for your pet is to make sure it is not exposed to Fourth of July celebrations. Family-based fireworks shows may be fun for youngsters, but they aren't for pets.''

Here are some Fourth of July do's and dont's:

Do make sure your pets are kept indoors during any firework displays. It is better for them to be in a familiar, safe and comfortable environment than outside, where the noise and light flashes disorient dis·o·ri·ent

Try to leave someone familiar at home with the family pet to soothe and reassure it that the situation is in control.

Do keep a current dog license and pet identification tag An identification tag might be:
  • Dog tag, an identification tag worn by dogs
  • Dog tag (identifier), an identification tag used by the military
  • A radio identification tag, a scanner-readable microchip implanted into livestock and pets for identication.
on your dog or cat at all times. If your pet becomes lost, a tag could be its ticket home.

Don't keep your pets in the back yard. Dogs in particular can break free of their restraints and jump backyard fences if fear prompts them to flee.

Don't ever take pets to community firework events. Most supervised events do not permit pets. The unfamiliar setting makes it more likely that the dog or cat can become lost in the noise and confusion.

Don't take your pet to the park or the beach to celebrate the holiday. If someone shoots off fireworks, the chances are increased that your pet will become confused and frightened and run away.

Los Angeles County animal shelters will be closed today for the holiday but will be available for service calls. Animal care and control officers will be deployed in the field to pick up stray animals.
