This year, Americans will spend $30 billion on pet gifts, a number that has doubled since 1994.

``Many owners see their pets as true companions ... and reward them as they would good friends,'' said Funda Alp, spokeswoman for the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association.

Here's a guide to help you figure out what kind of holiday gift to purchase for your own pet or someone else's:

1. Personality: Just like humans, pets have a variety of personalities. An interactive, blinking toy may suit an active cat, but may not be appropriate for one who prefers sleep.

2. Age: Many products for senior pets focus on added comfort, such as self-healing thermal beds, massagers and elevated designer feeding bowls.

3. Size: Most products can accommodate very large or unusually small pets, such as an extra-large bed or small stairs for easy couch access.

4. Safety: Always read package instructions. Items with small parts will require proper assembly to prevent choking.

5. Out with the old: Replacing tattered, old, favorite toys may be the best treat of all.

6. Design: A well-designed product, made with quality materials will please not only your pet, but also your pocketbook. While it may cost more, you will save in the long run by not having to replace it as often.
