PETERSON NAMED PRESIDENT OF SPRINT LOCAL TELECOMMUNICATIONS DIVISION

KANSAS CITY, Mo., July 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Sprint (NYSE: FON) announced today D. Wayne Peterson has been named president and chief operating officer of the company's Local Telecommunications Division replacing J. Stephen Vanderwoude, who has decided to leave Sprint to pursue other interests.
Peterson had been president of the Sprint United Telephone Mid- Atlantic operation since it was formed in March. Prior to that he had been president for 13 years of Carolina Telephone & Telegraph Company, Sprint's local telephone operation in North Carolina and South Carolina.
"Wayne has done an excellent job of heading our Mid-Atlantic operations," said William T. Esrey, Sprint's chairman and chief executive officer. "He is committed to quality, innovation and customer service, and the results he has achieved during his career attest to his leadership abilities."
Vanderwoude, 49, became president and chief operating officer of the Sprint Local Telecommunications Division in March following the company's merger with Centel. Prior to that, he had been president of Centel Corporation since June 1989.
"We are very disappointed to have Steve leave Sprint," said Esrey. "He provided strong guidance as we merged the local telephone divisions of Sprint and Centel, and all of us have been impressed with his determination to see the merger succeed. This was a personal decision for him, and we wish him well in the future."
"The new Sprint's local telephone operations are the best in the industry, and I appreciated the opportunity to direct them," said Vanderwoude. "However, as I looked at the future, I determined my own goals and ambitions have changed. I want to live at my home in Chicago and farm in North Carolina rather than relocate to Kansas City, and it would not be possible to do that and lead the operation."
Peterson, 57, joined Sprint in 1968, and served in various management positions in separations and settlements, cost analysis and revenue planning before being elected assistant vice president-revenues in 1974. In 1977, he was named vice president-marketing, and held the position until being named president of Carolina Telephone.
Sprint is an international telecommunications company with more than $10 million in annual revenues and the United States' only nationwide all-digital, fiber-optic network. Its divisions provide global long distance voice, data and video products and services, local telephone services to nearly 6 million subscriber lines in 19 states, and cellular operations that serve 42 metropolitan markets and more than 50 rural service areas.
