PERSONNEL CUTS TO AFFECT STAFF AT EDWARDS.

Edwards Air Force Base Edwards Air Force Base, U.S. military installation, 301,000 acres (121,805 hectares), S Calif., NE of Lancaster; est. 1933. It is one of the largest air force bases in the United States and has the world's longest runway.  will lose 123 civilian and military jobs next year as a result of personnel changes throughout the Air Force, officials said Friday.

As the result of the implementation of what the Air Force calls its Expeditionary ex·pe·di·tion·ar·y

     said in the announcement of the cuts. ``And I want to stress that the Air Force's war-fighting capability must be our first priority. That's the whole rationale behind the Expeditionary Aerospace Force concept.''

    The Air Force said the ``Expeditionary Aerospace Force'' concept marks a fundamental and evolutionary change in how it organizes, trains, and equips its units to meet national defense strategy and a changing global situation.

    The change will add personnel to the units that bear the brunt of overseas deployment and invest more research money in space-related programs, a Pentagon announcement said.

    By 2000, the Air Force will create Air Expeditionary Forces Deployed US Air Force wings, groups, and squadrons committed to a joint operation. Also called AEF.
