Industry

Derek M. D'Costa, PEng, MCIC,, of Toronto, ON, has been appointed to the position of process engineer at AECL, working in the Pickering A Return to Service Department. He was previously a review engineer in the approvals branch of the Ontario Ministry of the Environment.

Michael Harris, MCIC has recently joined NOVA Chemicals Canada Ltd. in Montreal, QC, as a project engineer.

R.C. Quittenton, PEng, FCIC has been elected a director of the Regional District of Nanaimo, BC for a three-year term beginning in December 1999. He is a past-president of the Professional Engineers of Ontario and a former director of The Chemical Institute of Canada.

Laurier Schramm, FCIC has been promoted to president and CEO of the Petroleum Recovery Institute in Calgary, AB. Schramm has been with the Institute in varying research and management capacities for the past 11 years.

Paul Berti, MCIC is now working as an assistant professor at McMaster University in Hamilton, ON in the departments of chemistry and biochemistry.

Murray Brooker, FCIC, of Memorial University of Newfoundland's department of chemistry, St. John's, NE, has been named chair of the 2001 Cordon Conference on Molten Salts and Liquid Metals. Brian Fahie, FCIC has been appointed associate director of the Analytical and Bioanalytical Research Labs at Eli Lilly Canada Inc. in Scarborough, ON.

Jocelyn Hellou, MCIC has been appointed adjunct professor in the department of chemistry at Dalhousie University, Halifax, NS effective July 1, 2000. Hellou is head of organic marine environmental chemistry in the marine environmental sciences division at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography in Dartmouth, NS. Her major area of research focuses on petroleum hydrocarbons in marine organisms.

Steven Holdcroft, FCIC has won a strategic project grant from NSERC to study the potential for polymers to supplement or replace inorganic semi-conductors in micro-electronic applications. Holdcroft, a chemistry professor at Simon Fraser University in Bumaby, BC, will undertake this three-year study with engineering science professor Jamal Deen.

Paul Li, MCIC has been hired as an assistant professor in the department of chemistry, Simon Fraser University, Burnaby, BC.

Helene Perreault, MCIC, working with a team of graduate students in the University of Manitoba's department of chemistry, Winnipeg, MB, has been awarded an NSERC grant to search for better ways of measuring and analyzing the contents of complex blood and tissue samples through chromatography and mass spectrometry.
