PERRY POWER PLANT RETURNS TO SERVICE; ENDS RECORD YEAR

 PERRY POWER PLANT RETURNS TO SERVICE; ENDS RECORD YEAR
 CLEVELAND, Jan. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- The Perry Power Plant returned to

service following a two-week shutdown.
 The plant restarted on Jan. 3 and began producing electricity for customers today (Sunday, Jan. 5).
 The plant was shut down on Dec. 22 when a fiberglass pipe carrying non-radioactive water broke. The fiberglass pipe has been replaced and its steel support has been redesigned.
 Despite this year-end outage, the Perry Power Plant had its best year since it began commercial operation in 1987. During 1991, the plant:
 -- produced more electricity for customers than any other year, 8,988,755,000 kilowatthours. That's enough electricity to power nearly 1.5 million average homes for the entire year;
 -- was available to generate electricity 90.8 percent of the time;
 -- operated at 86.5 percent of the plant's capacity; and
 -- received high marks for plant performance from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in its Systematic Assessment of Licensee Performance (SALP) report for the period Aug. 1, 1990 - Oct. 31, 1991.
 The Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company, a subsidiary of Centerior Energy Corporation (NYSE: CX) operates the Perry Power Plant for a consortium of five electric utilities.
