PERFORMANCE NOTES.Byline: The Register-Guard Choirs to sing on war and peace The Oregon Festival Choirs' girl choirs and boy choirs - Lyrica, Fiero, Cantilena and Allegro - will perform at 3 p.m. today at Central Lutheran Church, 1857 Potter St. The program will feature music on the theme "Winds of War, Songs of Peace." Admission is $5 for the general public, $3 for students and seniors. Tickets are available through the choirs' offices (465-9600) and will be sold at the door. Symphonic band to play Strauss University of Oregon horn professor Ellen Campbell will join the Eugene Symphonic Band to play Richard Strauss' Concerto No. 1 for Horn at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Beall Concert Hall at the University of Oregon School of Music, 961 E. 18th Ave. Admission is $4 for adults, $2 for students and seniors, $8 for family. Tickets will be sold at the door. The band's program also includes John Phillips Sousa's New Mexico March, Vincent Persichetti's Symphony for Band, Morton Gould's Ballad for Band, Jaromir Weinberger's Polka and Fugue, Hector Berlioz's "March to the Scaffold," Percy Grainger's Colonial Song and Charles Simon Catel's Overture in C. The concert will be conducted by Robert Ponto, an associate professor and director of bands at the UO School of Music.. Free noon concert features senior choir The Memory Tones, a senior choral group sponsored by the River Road Park and Recreation District, will sing "Songs You All Remember" in a free SHOcase Concert at 12:15 p.m. Thursday in the Hult Center lobby. Shakespeare is theme of opera ensemble concert The University Opera Ensemble, under the direction of Mark Kaczmarczyk, will present an evening of opera scenes and arias under the theme "Shakespeare and Opera" at 8:15 p.m. Thursday in Beall Concert Hall. Tickets, available at the door, are $5 general admission, $3 for students and senior citizens. The program will feature music from operas with connections to plays by William Shakespeare, including "The Fairy Queen" by Henry Purcell, "Romeo and Juliet" by Charles Gounod and "A Little Night Music" by Stephen Sondheim, with piano accompaniment by Ji-Won Lee. Gleemen will sing folk songs, show tunes The Eugene Gleemen, directed by John Jantzi, will sing American folk songs and music from Broadway shows at 4 p.m. May 18 at the First Christian Church, 1166 Oak St. Advance tickets are $8; call 485-5272. Tickets sold at the door will be $10. The 40-voice mixed choir of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Eugene, directed by Tom Sears, will join the Gleemen for this concert. The Eugene Gleemen also will perform at 7:30 p.m. May 23 at the Ebbert Memorial United Methodist Church, 532 C St., Springfield. Award-winning young pianists to give recital Four Lane County student pianists who won medals at the Oregon Music Teachers Association's Syllabus Program will give a free recital at 5 p.m. May 18 at United Lutheran Church, 2230 Washington St. The medalists are Crystal Riddle, a senior at Creswell High School; Amy Chu, a junior at Sheldon High; Wenqi Shao, a sophomore at South Eugene High; and Javier Hernandez, a junior at North Eugene High. Also performing will be students Andrew Holland, Kelly Stephenson, Amy Ueno, Konard Wojcik, Yui Zojo, Jessica Richey and Ross Leavitt. |
