Oregon Bach Festival The Oregon Bach Festival is an annual celebration of the works of Johann Sebastian Bach, held in Eugene, Oregon in late June and early July. It was co-founded by German conductor Helmuth Rilling and the former president of the American Choral Directors Association, Royce Saltzman,  founding executive director Royce Saltzman will receive the 2004 Outstanding Alumnus ALUMNUS, civil law. Saltzman received his doctorate from USC just before joining the faculty of the University of Oregon The University of Oregon is a public university located in Eugene, Oregon. The university was founded in 1876, graduating its first class two years later. The University of Oregon is one of 60 members of the Association of American Universities.  in 1964. He co-founded the Oregon Bach Festival with Helmuth Rilling Helmuth Rilling (b. May 29, 1933)[1] is a German conductor.

He was born in Stuttgart into a musical family. He received his early training in Protestant seminaries in Württemberg.
 in 1970. He is now an emeritus professor of music at the UO.

In addition to his Bach Festival and university experience, the nominators cited Saltzman's accomplishments as co-founder and past president of the International Federation for Choral Music, past president of the American Choral Directors Association The American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), headquartered in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, is a non-profit organization with the stated purpose of promoting excellence in the field of choral music. , and prominence as a civic leader in Eugene.

Upon returning to Eugene, Saltzman will put finishing touches on the 35th Oregon Bach Festival, which runs June 25-July 11. Concerts include J.S. Bach's St. Matthew Passion St Matthew Passion may refer to the following musical compositions:
  • Matthäuspassion, St. Matthew's story of the last days of Christ, composed by Johann Sebastian Bach in 1727 or 1729.
 and Mass in B Minor, W.A. Mozart's Requiem and Felix Mendelssohn's ``Elijah.'' Featured artists include composer/conductor Krzysztof Penderecki, pianist Jeffrey Kahane and singer Thomas Quasthoff.

ACE delays play opening because of illness

Because of an illness in the cast, Actors Cabaret of Eugene delayed the opening of ``The Octette Bridge Club,'' a comic play set in the 1930s and '40s about eight sisters who meet regularly to play cards.

Originally set to open this past Friday, the first performance is now planned for Thursday. The play will also show Friday and Saturday, and May 21-22 and May 28-29. All shows are at 8 p.m. at Actors Cabaret Annex, 39 W. 10th Ave. For tickets, contact the ACE box office, 683-4368.

The concert will not only have performances by the Oregon Festival Choirs' touring and training choirs, but also will feature the debut of a Parent Chorus and a mass choir of participants from the organization's artist residency in several area schools this year.

"Our mission at Oregon Festival Choirs is built on the facts that singing in a choir benefits a person's physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health, and that anyone can learn to sing," says founder and artistic director Peter Robb. "This concert will provide a clear demonstration of these facts."

Tickets, $5 for adults and $3 for students and seniors, are available through the Oregon Festival Choirs office (465-9600) and at the door.

Middle school jazz choir

to give noonhour concert

The Shasta Middle School's jazz choir, Session, will perform a SHOcase Concert at 12:15 p.m. Thursday in the Hult Center lobby, at Seventh Avenue and Willamette Street.

Under the direction of David Fitch, the choir primarily performs vocal jazz, but its repertoire ranges from madrigals to 20th century music. The 30-minute program, produced by the Support Hultcenter Operations organization, is free. Information: 682-5733.

Seattle Boychoir to give concert in Eugene

The Northwest Boychoir of Seattle will sing Maurice Durufle's Requiem, as well as American hymns, spirituals and folk songs at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Central Lutheran Church, 1857 Potter St.

 donation will be taken at the concert, with the proceeds going to the church's special project fund.

The choir is a select group of 60 boys ages 10 to 18, who participate in a year-round program of music education and professional performances.

Directed by Joseph Crnko, the choir has made guest appearances with the Seattle Symphony and Orchestra Seattle. The choir also has performed on movie sound tracks, including "Millions" and "First Daughter."

Beethoven tops program

at Junior Orchestra concert

The Eugene Junior Orchestra will perform the finale from Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the North Eugene High School North Eugene High School is a public high school of about 1,200 students in Eugene, Oregon, United States. It is located at 200 Silver Lane near the Santa Clara area of Eugene.[1] North Eugene's mascot is the Highlander.  Auditorium, 200 Silver Lane.

Sponsored by Arts Umbrella and conducted by David Chinburg, the Junior Orchestra is made up of 90 middle and high school musicians from the Eugene-Springfield area.

Eugene Symphonic Band

to perform this week

The Eugene Symphonic Band, conducted by Roger Rush, will present its Winter Concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Beall Concert Hall, 961 E. 18th Ave., on the University of Oregon campus The University of Oregon campus in Eugene, Oregon has around 80 buildings and facilities, including athletics sites such as Hayward Field, which is the site for the 2008 Olympic Track and Field Trials, and McArthur Court, and off-campus sites such as nearby Autzen Stadium and the .

The program includes Ron Nelson's "Courtly Airs and Dances," Charles Mackerras' "Pineapple Poll Ballet Suite," Robert Russell Bennett's "Four Friends," Percy Grainger's "The Immovable Do," Gordon Jacob's "Music for a Festival" and W. Paris Chambers' "Boys of the Old Brigade March."

Rush is founder and conductor of the newly formed British Brass Band of the Oregon Brass Society.

He moved to Eugene upon retirement two years ago after 40 years of conducting secondary, collegiate and community bands and orchestras in Oklahoma, New Mexico, Texas and Colorado.

Rush has been playing horn with Eugene Symphonic Band for the past two years.

Tickets - $5 for adults, $3 for students or senior citizens, and $8 for families - will be sold at the door.
