UO music scholar finishes motet compilation The motets of one of the 16th century's greatest composers are available in a new 21-volume compilation, edited by Peter Bergquist, a professor emeritus at the University of Oregon. "Orlando di Lasso Noun 1. Orlando di Lasso - Belgian composer (1532-1594) Lasso, Roland de Lassus : The Complete Motets," published by A-R Editions Inc., contains 575 works in more than 4,800 pages of music and text. It reflects Bergquist's decadelong dec·ade·long adj. Lasting a decade: a decadelong national research effort. effort to uncover and convert to modern notation some of the earliest published versions of motets by di Lasso, who died in 1594. Before this, Bergquist said, the standard published collections of Lasso's motets contained arbitrary changes or omissions, incorrect placement of text under music and changes in the lyrics, which turned some original drinking songs or love poetry into pious sermons. Bergquist said he tried to emphasize di Lasso's original intent. Three of Bergquist's colleagues from the University of Wisconsin and the University of Richmond edited eight volumes of the edition. Bergquist edited the remaining 13 volumes himself. C. Bennett Pascal, a professor emeritus in the UO department of classics, added expertise on Latin texts and translations. |
