 PERFORMANCE AMINE SOLVENTS IN GAS PROCESSING UNITS
 CAN BOOST SULFUR RECOVERY TO OVER 99 PERCENT
 /ADVANCE/WASHINGTON, June 16 /PRNewswire/ -- In response to a reduction in allowable limits for sulfur emissions permitted by environmental agencies, over 99.9 percent of hydrogen sulfide |H(2)S~ can be removed from process streams in oil and gas processing plants using a high performance amine solvent. This corresponds to less than 100 ppm of H(2)S remaining in the treated off-gas, and enables it to be vented safely rather than incinerated, with the additional benefit of energy savings.
 Technology to accomplish this was presented here today at ECO WORLD '92, in a joint paper by Union Carbide Chemicals and Plastics Company Inc. and the Ralph M. Parsons Company.
 Speakers from the two companies described how to accomplish this by the addition of a hydrogenation reactor and amine unit to treat gas from conventionally used Claus-type sulfur recovery units. Choice of the amine solvent is a critical factor, they pointed out. Two supporting case histories were presented, involving use of high performance UCARSOL(R) HS-103 solvent developed by Union Carbide.
 They noted that generic alkanolamine solvents were first used for acid gas treating in refinery process gas streams, hydrogen plants, natural gas liquid extraction facilities, ammonia plants and ethylene plants. With the need for greater selectivity in preferentially absorbing H(2)S, a tertiary amine, methyldiethanolamine (MDEA), became the solvent of choice.
 But more recently, the authors pointed out, in response to the need for even greater selectivity and lower energy consumption, proprietary additives have been combined with MDEA and sold as specialty solvents with a package of engineering and analytical services. Specialty solvents can be manufactured to offer enhanced removal of organic sulfur compounds, such as carbonyl sulfide, or they can be used for more efficient removal of CO(2) vs. MDEA.
