PERFECTION, THEN FRUSTRATION.

FOUNTAIN VALLEY Fountain Valley, city (1990 pop. 53,691), Orange co., S Calif.; inc. 1957. Chiefly residential, Fountain Valley also has diverse manufactures, including apparel, computer equipment, semiconductors, and medical equipment. For that reason, Williams, a Quartz Hill wrestling standout, was the talk of the Southern Section Masters meet in Fountain Valley, which he couldn't compete in after missing the required weigh-ins at last week's Southern Section Inland Division championships at Ayala High of Chino Chino (chē`nō), city (1990 pop. 59,682), San Bernardino co., S Calif.; founded 1887, inc. 1910. Williams, who'd already qualified for the 160-pound division semifinals, arrived at the weigh-in at Ayala 45 minutes late because his coach got lost on the way.

He needed just one victory in three possible matches to qualify for the Masters meet, where the top 32 wrestlers See

After word got out that Quartz Hill coach Todd Doyle resigned as a result of the incident, several Golden League coaches called the Southern Section office, making unsuccessful appeals for an at-large berth to Masters on Williams' behalf.

Williams, however, has no complaints about the ruling.

``A lot of people in my family and coaches from other schools are taking it really hard, but I'm just trying to keep a positive attitude about it because obviously it wasn't meant to be and there's nothing I can do about it,'' Williams said. ``It's a rule and you've got to follow the rules. They were just doing their jobs. It's not really their fault.''

Lancaster coach Pat Hayhurst, Williams' eighth grade math teacher, was among those who contacted Southern Section assistant commissioner Rob Vigod.

``I think they ought to have some provision for this kind of thing,'' Hayhurst said. ``I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)
