His estranged wife wasn't at her parents' home, so he headed to the Atwood Boulevard house that she and Thompson had recently purchased, Perez said during an afternoon of questioning from defense attorney Henry Salcido.

``I was going to shoot myself inside the house, right there in front of her . . . to show her how much I still cared for her,'' Perez said.

Why did he want to do that? Salcido asked.

``I guess to make her feel guilty about what she put me through,'' the defendant explained. ``I told her a long time ago that I was never going to be with another woman.''

``No,'' Perez answered. ``My intent to go in that house was to kill myself, not for him to get hurt.''

He recalled being shocked when he saw Thompson lying mortally wounded in the kitchen. ``It wasn't supposed to be that way. I was supposed to be the one on the ground,'' Perez said.

``I'm sorry it happened. I'm sorry for whatever pain it brought to the family,'' he added. Thompson's brother, mother and other relatives have been in court throughout the trial.

The murder trial in North Valley Superior Court began March 8, and Perez is scheduled to continue his testimony when court resumes Monday.
