But the anger Perez is venting toward umpires is no longer an isolated incident. Hernandez called the balk on Perez, and that fed into Grissom's homer and the Giants' victory. ``He called (the balk) because I think he's afraid to be here in San Francisco and to (have) the fans all over him,'' Perez said. ``It's a problem.'' Health also was an issue by night's end when Dodgers left fielder Brian Jordan Jordan injured the knee beating out a grounder to shortstop in the sixth, before the craziness began. Of course, the offensive woes underscored the night as the Dodgers were limited to an unearned run by Giants starter Jason Schmidt Jason David Schmidt (born January 29, 1973 in Lewiston, Idaho) is a Major League Baseball pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers. But Ward rounded first base too far, and shortstop Rich Aurilia cut the throw off from right field and nailed Ward trying to get back to the bag. Adrian Beltre grounded out to second to end it. ``I tried to dive back to the bag but my arm got stuck,'' Ward said. ``(Andres) Galarraga was in front of the bag, so even if my arm wasn't stuck I still would have had trouble getting back.'' Ward's baserunning was a low point, but the postgame focus was on Hernandez. The Dodgers were hoppin' mad at Hernandez, who said he ruled Perez tried to deceive the baserunner by moving his leg toward home plate before the pickoff pick·off n. 1. Dodgers pitching coach Jim Colborn said. ``I try to get (Perez) to practice. He won't practice. What he does out there is just very unsophisticated and the umpire was reading way too much into it and made a big call where a non-call was what should have been done. In my opinion, he got confused by the way Odalis lifts his leg, which is a little unorthodox.'' Hernandez said Perez's move was different from any of his other pickoff moves in that he stepped toward the plate. If he doesn't throw toward the plate, Hernandez said it was a balk, but Perez vehemently disagreed. ``They are taking my game away from me, and I'm here because I want to win,'' Perez said. ``I don't want to lose. I hate to lose. When somebody's taking away something that belongs to me, I be mad. I be the worst guy in the world. So I don't care what they think.'' It's the third time in two years Perez was ejected for arguing with an umpire during a start, but even upon his return to the dugout he wasn't finished. Perez came to the stairs of the dugout multiple times to yell at Hernandez before disappearing through the tunnel. ``It was a great game. We should have won the game 1-0 until (Hernandez) did what he did,'' Perez said. ``They do something like that, I will get mad and I will show him up. I don't care what they think about me. I don't care. I don't want anybody taking my game away from me. The last three games, I was ejected two times because they made a bad call.'' Brian Dohn, (818) 713-3607 brian.dohn(at)dailynews.com |
