PEREZ, DODGERS LOSE COOL MIFFED STARTER EJECTED; L.A. WINLESS AT S.F. SAN FRANCISCO 2, DODGERS 1.Byline: Brian Dohn Staff Writer SAN FRANCISCO San Francisco (săn frănsĭs`kō), city (1990 pop. 723,959), coextensive with San Francisco co., W Calif., on the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, which are connected by the strait known as the Golden - When Dodgers left-hander Odalis Perez got ejected 11 days ago in Cleveland it was viewed as frustration boiling over about a couple of blown calls on the basepaths. But the anger Perez is venting toward umpires is no longer an isolated incident. Following a balk balk the action of a horse when it refuses to obey a command to which it usually responds. Also, Dodgers left fielder Brian Jordan Jordan had soreness with the knee throughout spring training and the early parts of the season while continuing an aggressive rehabilitation problem. He injured the knee beating out a grounder to shortstop in the sixth. The offensive woes continued as the Dodgers were limited to an unearned run by Giants starter Jason Schmidt Jason David Schmidt (born January 29, 1973 in Lewiston, Idaho) is a Major League Baseball pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers. But Ward rounded first base too far, and shortstop Rich Aurilia cut the throw from right field and nailed Ward trying to get back to the bag. Adrian Beltre grounded out to second to end it. Another concern for the Dodgers is Perez, who hasn't won since May 23 and obviously was bothered by the balk call from first-base umpire Angel Hernandez in the sixth inning. Perez appeared to have Ray Durham picked off, but Hernandez called a balk. Dodgers manager Jim Tracy argued and was ejected. Perez continued pitching and got Edgardo Alfonzo to pop out to second base for the second out of the inning, but then hung a 2-0 breaking ball that Grissom crushed into the left field bleachers to give the Giants a 2-1 lead. Grissom, who played the past two seasons with the Dodgers, has homered four times and has six RBI RBI abbr. Baseball runs batted in Noun 1. rbi - a run that is the result of the batter's performance; "he had more than 100 rbi last season" run batted in against his former teammates this season. However, the inning's excitement didn't end there. Barry Bonds reached first on a hard grounder, and Andres Galarraga popped out in foul territory behind first base. But Perez, who appeared to have a few choice words for Hernandez as the inning progressed, had more to say as he walked off the field and was ejected. It's the third time in two years Perez was ejected for arguing with an umpire during a start, but even upon his return to the dugout he wasn't finished. Perez, who was ejected June 13 in Cleveland, came to the stairs of the dugout multiple times to yell toward Hernandez before disappearing through the tunnel. While Perez (4-6) pitched well in allowing two runs on four hits in six innings, he remains winless in his past six starts. He is 0-4 with a 6.62 ERA. Schmidt (7-3) wasn't as sharp as his three-hit, 11-strikeout gem last week in Los Angeles, but he pitched very well in allowing one unearned run in throwing his second consecutive complete game, and fourth of the season. In typical Dodgers offensive fashion, they grabbed a 1-0 lead in the ugliest of ways off Schmidt in the sixth inning, but it could have been much more. Shortstop Cesar Izturis led off with a groundball to shortstop and was safe when Rich Aurilia's throw pulled first baseman Andres Galarraga off the bag. Perez failed to execute a sacrifice bunt, but Dave Roberts singled to right. However, after Jordan's infield single kept the inning alive, Daryle Ward struck out on a 96 mph fastball to end the threat. Brian Dohn, (818) 713-3607 brian.dohn(at)dailynews.com |
