PERCEPTRONICS RECEIVES $1 MILLION CONTRACT TO IMPROVE MILITARY
 TRAINING USING PERCNET TECHNOLOGY
WOODLAND HILLS, Calif., Aug. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Perceptronics Inc. (NASDAQ: PERC) announced today that the U.S. Army Research Institute (ARI) has awarded the company a $1 million research and development contract, which includes approximately $750,000 in options, to enhance the effectiveness of certain military training systems.
Under the three-phase, 16-month program, Perceptronics will develop an advanced modeling, simulation, measurement and analysis (MSMA) system based on its proprietary PERCNET simulation software. PERCNET is the first computer-aided engineering software to employ process modeling and simulation for analysing human-system interactions in complex systems. With the help of PERCNET, human factors and training analysts can create graphical models of complex military scenarios, then run computer simulations, using hypothetical or actual data, to analyze the scenarios from a human performance standpoint.
PERCNET will be used to develop new analytical and training aids for military training systems that rely on interactive simulators tied together in a distributed network. Distributed Interactive Simulation -- DIS to the Army -- allows personnel to experience the sights, sounds and stresses of actual military combat. Perceptronics' new MSMA will improve DIS training effectiveness, by providing performance assessment and evaluation software able to handle the complexity of typical tactical scenarios.
Perceptronics' goal is to develop and demonstrate MSMA software tools that will allow DIS training personnel to create exercise scenarios rapidly and easily, track the performance of combat units during the scenario, assess and evaluate unit performance, and create and maintain a training strategies data base, including standard training scenarios. The new MSMA software technology will be available to the armed services for exercises on the U.S. Army's SIMNET tactical training system and other DIS systems, and is intended to greatly improve the ability of such systems to maintain troop readiness for missions such as the Gulf War.
"This R&D program is one of several that have been made possible by innovative application of our PERCNET and CACE software technology," said Dr. Gershon Weltman, Perceptronics' chief executive officer. "We believe our PERCNET and CACE software products are building a leadership position in modeling and simulation for Perceptronics that will attract continued defense R&D opportunities."
He noted that in July the company was part of the Hughes Santa Barbara Research Center team awarded a defense contract that will use Perceptronics' CACE process modeling software to improve manufacturing techniques for electronic sensors in military imaging systems.
Weltman added: "Defense R&D is strengthening our technology base, from which we are creating a family of commercial software tools, including PERCNET/HSI, CACE/PM and CACE/DMS. We are looking for sales of these commercial products to contribute substantially to the diversification and growth of our future revenues."
Perceptronics recently reported fiscal 1992 revenues of $25.5 million, almost all of which stemmed from defense-related activity.
Perceptronics is engaged in research and development and in the manufacture and marketing of computer-based simulation software and systems for commercial and military training and decision support.
