PEOPLES GAS URGES COMMON SENSE WHEN HEATING HOMES

TAMPA, Fla., March 12 /PRNewswire/ -- As another cool front approaches Florida, residents and visitors should review several simple but important heating rules to keep their homes warm and safe.
Following are tips from Peoples Gas and other area and state safety officials:
 1. Schedule annual inspections for all heaters and furnaces. Any authorized heating and air conditioning contractor, including those at Peoples Gas, can inspect, clean and relight pilot lights on any natural gas or propane appliance. Operating your gas appliances without maintenance is dangerous and similar to neglecting the regular care of your vehicle's brakes, tires and other safety features.
 2. Read carefully the entire instruction booklet for portable heaters, and follow the guidelines. Injury from improper use of portable heaters is one of the most preventable of all home accidents in the United States. Check with your local safety or fire department before purchasing a space heater to make sure the unit is not forbidden by local or state regulations. Never use an unvented space heater in a sleeping area.
 3. Never use as a room heater any outdoor gas or charcoal grill, or any device that is not designed and manufactured to heat a room. Combustion in a charcoal grill can create a toxin called carbon monoxide, a substance that replaces oxygen in your blood. Keep several smoke detectors in good working condition around the house, and remember that they signal danger. Don't ignore their signals.
 4. If there are any doubts or worries about the safety of the heating in your home, call Peoples Gas or your local energy supplier.
