Rendall Targets Hiring, Retention of Talent at DMJM DMJM Daniel, Mann, Johnson, & Mendenhall (architecture, engineering, and construction services firm)

CHUCK Rendall knows the concept of company loyalty has changed considerably in the 37 years since he joined Daniel, Mann, Johnson & Mendenhall.

So as the new chairman of DMJM, the 10th largest architecture and engineering firm in the country, Rendall's first priority is to combat the industry-wide brain drain caused by the flight of young talent to dot-corns and the rest of the tech sector.

"Every company in the country is having problems finding, training and retaining people," lie said. "We'd like to make DMJM the company that every architect and engineer wants to work for."

Rendall plans to lure potential employees and hang on to current ones by "trying to create exciting career paths" to compete with the stock options, flex time and other goodies offered by tech firms.

To raise the company profile among young people, he is launching an outreach program that provides talented high school students with internships and college scholarships. And for current employees, he plans professional development programs featuring ongoing university training as well as in-house courses in management and computer skills.

Rendall is not new to such programs. He was previously vice chairman and oversaw the firm's office of professional development.

Another priority for Rendall is making sure DMJM stays current with its use of technology. He intends to collaborate with the firm's chief knowledge officer on new ways of doing business, like using secure Web sites as information exchange points for company offices and partner firms.

Currently, DMJM is working on the $1.8 billion Alameda Corridor rail project as well as the new Rand Corp. headquarters in Santa Monica. The company also designed Universal CityWalk.

The Los Angeles-based firm merged last year with Spillis Candela candela (kăndĕ`lə), in weights and measures: see candle.
