Jane Caddell was appointed vice president of consulting services at the Employers Group, a not-for-profit human resources management association headquartered in Los Angeles. She was most recently manager of human resources at Atlantic Richfield Co.

Real Estate

Stephen I. Reinstein was named senior vice president of development at Regent Properties in Beverly Hills. He will act as project manager for the Hollywood Marketplace project at Sunset Boulevard and Vine Street, and will oversee pre-development activities for the firm's new projects. Reinstein was previously a consultant to the company.

Retail

John' Schroder was appointed group vice president of human resources and labor relations at Ralphs Grocery Co. in Los Angeles. He will be responsible for activities at the company's 446 supermarkets throughout California and in Las Vegas. Schroder was most recently director of human resources and labor relations for the Cincinnati Kroger Marketing Area.

Presiding Appellate Judge Returning to Private Practice

ONE of the top judges in L.A.'s courts is about to get a fresh look at the legal system from the other side of the bench.

George P. Schiavelli, presiding judge presiding judge n. 1) in both state and federal appeals court, the judge who chairs the panel of three or more judges during hearings and supervises the business of the court.  of the appellate division of Superior Court, will leave the bench July 17 to rejoin the ranks of private attorneys. He will be one of 13 attorneys in the L.A. appellate group of Oakland-based Crosby Heafey Roach & May, which has a total of 65 attorneys in its Los Angeles office.

"Coming from the bench, I'm hoping to bring a perspective as both a trial judge and an appellate court A court having jurisdiction to review decisions of a trial-level or other lower court.

Schiavelli, 52, has served as a Superior Court judge since 1994, specializing in "long-cause" cases (usually complex civil litigation).

In 1997, California Chief Justice Ronald George appointed Schiavelli to the appellate division. He was selected as presiding judge for the division last year and again this year. Chief Justice George also appointed Schiavelli to sit on the state Second District Court of Appeal.

"I view my tenure on the bench as the highlight of my professional career," Schiavelli said. "I am deeply saddened to leave, but an unanticipated illness in my family compels my decision."

Schiavelli won't be leaving the bench altogether, though. He has also joined the L.A. branch of Alternative Resolution Centers and says he will be available as a private judge to settle cases through alternative dispute resolution Procedures for settling disputes by means other than litigation; e.g., by Arbitration, mediation, or minitrials. Such procedures, which are usually less costly and more expeditious than litigation, are increasingly being used in commercial and labor disputes, Divorce .

"I wanted to be a judge ever since I was a child, and this will allow me to help resolve disputes outside of the courts, thereby relieving pressure on the courts themselves," he said.

Prior to being named a judge, Schiavelli was an attorney in private practice and served as president of the Italian-American Lawyers Association. He is currently president of the UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles
