PENNSYLVANIA TURNPIKE LINK WITH I-95 UNDERWAY; DESIGN CONSULTANT HIRED
HARRISBURG, Pa., May 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Calling it "the most important highway project on the East Coast," the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission recently selected KCI Technologies, Inc. of Mechanicsburg, Pa., as preliminary design consultant for the I-95/Turnpike interchange.
The primary subconsultant for the design activities will be Greiner, Inc.-Mid Atlantic, from King of Prussia, Pa.
KCI Technologies, Inc. will conduct the needs study and design location study. They will also prepare an environmental impact statement. When completed, the interchange will directly link the Pennsylvania Turnpike with Interstate 95 in Bucks County, at long last connecting the only missing link of interstate highway between Florida and Maine.
"The people of Philadelphia have been waiting a long time for this work to begin," said Commissioner Robert A. Brady. "The connection will make access to the city much easier, and will improve the flow of traffic not only in Philadelphia, but in all of eastern Pennsylvania."
The design study is tentatively scheduled to begin in September 1992, and will take three years for completion. This study phase will be followed by final design, which could take another three years to complete. Assuming these schedules are met, construction could begin before the year 2000.
"This project is one of the largest in dollar value that the commission has ever undertaken," said Commissioner Frank A. Ursomarso. "The construction will provide many jobs in the Philadelphia area, and the road itself will contribute to greater economic growth for the entire Delaware Valley."
The fee for the preliminary studies conducted by KCI Technologies, Inc. has yet to be negotiated. Their work will also include study of a possible six-lane widening of the Turnpike for eight miles from the Philadelphia Interchange (No. 28) to the Delaware River Bridge. They will also look at the possible widening of the existing bridge and construction of a second structure over the Delaware. Construction of an additional toll plaza on the Turnpike mainline west of the I-95/Turnpike interchange will also be studied. Construction of the project is estimated to cost approximately $500 million depending on the results of the studies.
The commission will receive more than $300 million in federal reimbursement toward this project.
