PENNSYLVANIA HEALTH DEPARTMENT NAMES NEW HIV/AIDS BUREAU DIRECTOR

PENNSYLVANIA HEALTH DEPARTMENT NAMES NEW HIV/AIDS BUREAU DIRECTOR
HARRISBURG, Pa., July 15 /PRNewswire/ -- State Health Secretary Allan S. Noonan today announced the appointment of Janice P. Kopelman of Harrisburg as director of the Bureau of HIV/AIDS, effective Aug. 10.
Kopelman replaces Michael Carbine, who left the department last month to return to a consulting position in Washington.
"Janice Kopelman comes to the Department of Health at a crucial time in the AIDS epidemic when the spread of the disease is reaching new populations," Noonan said. "She brings to the job a keen ability to meet the needs of the known AIDS population, as well as the under- reported populations of drug users and women and children, where the incidence of AIDS is rapidly growing."
Since 1988, Kopelman has been director of social services for Harrisburg Hospital, where she was responsible for management, preparation, and administration of the hospital's social services budget, staff supervision and education program development and evaluation. She also was chairman of the hospital's AIDS Oversight Committee and of its Managers Task Force on AIDS.
The South Central Pennsylvania AIDS Planning Coalition representative to the state's HIV Planning Council, Kopelman also is involved with AIDS community health service organizations such as HIV Disease Care Consortium and People of Color Against AIDS.
As the Health Department's AIDS/HIV director, Kopelman will supervise the activities of the 43-person bureau, which includes the divisions of education and training, intervention and care and epidemiology.
Prior to joining Harrisburg Hospital, Kopelman served as the director of social work services at Carlisle Hospital, an instructor of child development at Penn State University, the assistant director of social services for Hershey Medical Center and the social services director at Pennsylvania College of Optometry.
Kopelman is a graduate of Temple University and the University of Pennsylvania School of Social Work.
