PENNSYLVANIA AUTO EMISSIONS CONTRACT TO INCREASE ENVIROTEST'S ANNUAL REVENUES BY APPROXIMATELY 60 PERCENT

TUCSON, Ariz., Oct. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Envirotest Systems Corp. (NASDAQ-NMS: ENVI) today announced to investment securities analysts that the expected formal award of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's auto emissions vehicle contract will mean approximately $60 million of additional annual revenues to Envirotest, or about a 60 percent increase over the company's present revenue base of $90 million.
Chester Davenport, chairman of Envirotest, informed the securities analysts that, "Envirotest is extremely excited by its selection by Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania is by far the largest contract to date for centralized auto emissions testing. It covers seven years, commencing Jan. 1, 1995, and will mean a backlog of approximately $400 million over this period, more than double the size of Envirotest's current backlog.
"Pennsylvania ranked Envirotest as the highest of three competing proposals to establish and operate the vehicle emissions testing program in 25 Pennsylvania counties by 1995. That program will involve approximately 6.0 million, or about 75 percent of the Commonwealth's passengers vehicles.
"On Friday, Pennsylvania selected Envirotest from among three bidders to enter into negotiations for a final contract. As a result, Envirotest will be the only contractor negotiating with Pennsylvania during this final stage. Historically, every contractor that has started such negotiations has been awarded the contract.
"The implications of an award of this contract for the growth potential of our company are extremely significant," Mr. Davenport told the securities analysts.
The formal award of the contract is expected within the next five to seven weeks.
Envirotest Systems Corp. is the leading provider of centralized vehicle emissions testing programs for states and municipalities. In addition, Envirotest is the only domestic provider of contractor- operated centralized testing services outside the United States.
