 PENN STUDENTS SEND VALENTINES 'CONDOMGRAMS
AS PART OF AIDS AWARENESS WEEK
In recognition of AID Awareness Week, which kicks off today, many students at the University of Pennsylvania will pass up chocolates and flowers and send their Valentines "condomgrams" instead.
Condomgrams contain four condoms (in an array of colors), a Hershey's kiss, and a coupon for Condomnation, a condom retailer on 4th and South streets. The packages are wrapped in red cellophane and tied with a red ribbon.
Student members of FLASH (Facilitating Learning About Sexual Health) will sell the comdomgrams on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of this week from noon to 4 p.m. at a booth on 3620 Locust Walk, and will deliver them on Friday, Valentines Day.
"We thought that this would be a healthier alternative to candygrams, and a fun way to spread the safer sex message to Penn students," said Penn senior Kathleen Cardona, a FLASH member.
The condomgram sale is just one of many activities being planned by Penn organizations as part of AIDS Awareness Week. For example, on Tuesday, Feb. 11, from 6 to 7 p.m., Tony Silvestrie, chairperson of the Governor's Council for Sexual Minorities, will speak on the topic "AIDS: Where We've Been, Where We're Going and Why We're Not Getting There Fast Enough." Sponsored by Penn's Student Health Office and the Graduate Student Activities Council, the presentation will take place at Steitler Hall, Room B-6, 208 S. 37th St., Philadelphia.
And on Thursday, Feb. 13, at 4:30 p.m., Anna Forbes, from the Philadelphia AIDS Activities Coordinating Office, will speak about "Women and AIDS: Confronting the Issue," in the Houston Hall Auditorium, 3417 Spruce St., Philadelphia.
Photo opportunity: Photos can be taken of FLASH members at their booth on Locust Walk from noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
