PEN SPELLS DOOM FULLMER'S HIT BEATS ANGELS AS RELIEVERS FAIL TEXAS 7, ANGELS 4.

Byline: Gabe Lacques Staff Writer

ARLINGTON, Texas Arlington is a city in Tarrant County, Texas (USA) within the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington metropolitan area. According to a U.S Census Bureau release, as of July 1, 2006 Arlington has an estimated population of 367,197.  - After trading Scott Schoeneweis Scott David Schoeneweis [SHOW-en-WEISS] (born October 2, 1973, in Long Branch, New Jersey) is an American left-handed relief pitcher in Major League Baseball. From to the present, the White Sox have played in U.S.  last July, the Angels have gone without a left-hander in the bullpen and swore up and down one would not be necessary.

As long as Brendan Donnelly Brendan Kevin Donnelly (b. July 4, 1971 in Washington, D.C.) is a Major League Baseball relief pitcher with the Boston Red Sox.

 are healthy, they're probably right.

But Donnelly is in Arizona, recovering from a broken nose suffered in spring training, and the Angels' bullpen is not as deep as they thought it would be.

That was exposed Monday night by an old friend.

Brad Fullmer Bradley Ryan Fullmer is a major league baseball player who bats left handed and throws right handed. He was born January 17, 1975 in Chatsworth, California.

Fullmer last played at the Major League level during the 2004 season with the Texas Rangers.
, cut loose by the Angels after suffering a season-ending knee injury last June, ripped a pinch-hit three-run double off Ben Weber William Jennings Bryan "Ben" Weber (born July 23, 1916 in St. Louis - died June 16, 1979 in New York) was America's first twelve tone composer.

Weber, completely self-taught as a composer, was in the late 30s part of a Chicago musical group that included George Perle and
to key a five-run sixth inning, and the hit proved decisive in the Texas Rangers' 7-6 victory in front of 18,156 at The Ballpark.

Texas took three of four games in the series and Monday's result meant the Angels' opening road trip ended at a modest 4-3 instead of a robust 5-2. It might not have ended that way if their bullpen was intact.

Rodriguez last season held left-handers to a .185 average; Donnelly was at .189. But in Donnelly's absence, Rodriguez now assumes late-inning roles and Weber inherits the pressure situations Rodriguez once filled.

Given his first chance in a key situation this season, Weber could not get it done. He yielded an infield single to Michael Young, a go-ahead two-run single to Hank Blalock and then the double to Fullmer for a 7-3 lead.

``I thought Web made some good pitches,'' manager Mike Scioscia said.

That's a nice try at diplomacy, Weber said.

``That's sugarcoating,'' said Weber, who has given up eight hits in 4 2/3 innings this season. ``Good pitches, that's (baloney). I blew the (darn) game. I made some good pitches, but the bottom line is, I lost the game. That's baseball.''

Quirky injuries are also part of the game, and Donnelly's broken nose, suffered in a spring-training batting practice accident, became a factor just seven games into the season.

``If you put Donnelly in the pen, we're able to match up much better,'' Scioscia said. ``It will start showing up on given nights. (Monday), I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

if a left-hander would have made much difference.''

Maybe, maybe not. Last season, Blalock hit .312 against right-handers and .183 against left-handers and manager Buck Showalter often benched him against lefty starters. For his career, Fullmer is at .296 against righties, .226 against lefties.

The Rangers caught a break of sorts when Shane Halter, making his first start of the year at third base, dived to snare snare (snar) a wire loop for removing polyps and tumors by encircling them at the base and closing the loop.

Young's chopper, got up and tried throwing to second when he probably could have beaten Gerald Laird to third base for a force play.

Instead, Ramon Nivar beat the throw to second, loading the bases. Blalock and Fullmer's hits erased the 3-2 lead starter Jarrod Washburn handed Weber.

``I'm sure he's very happy right now,'' Washburn said of Fullmer. ``That's a big hit for him and the kind of guy he is, he's probably smiling a little wider than normal.''

Fullmer, a key cog in the Angels' 2002 World Series run, always desired a greater role, but often was platooned against left-handers before his season ended last June when he tore the patella patella (pətĕl`ə): see kneecap.  tendon in his right knee.
