PECO SETS EMPLOYEE ELECTION FOR NO UNION OR UNION

PHILADELPHIA, March 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Philadelphia Electric Company (NYSE: PE) (PE) announced today that an agreement has been reached which will allow some 6,000 PECO employees to vote on whether they wish to remain union free or be represented by a union.
The dates for the election, subject to the approval of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), will be June 9, 10 and 11, 1993, at various company locations.
The agreement to hold the vote was reached today among PECO, the NLRB, and two unions -- the Independent Group Association (IGA) and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW).
It culminates 15 months of negotiation and litigation which followed an organizing petition filed in December, 1991, by the IBEW, and a subsequent filing by the IGA, a former PECO employees association for more than 50 years.
William J. Kaschub, PECO senior vice president for Human Resources, said that the Company is pleased to have reached the agreement. "It is," he said "in the best interests of our employees and our customers to put this issue behind us and to focus on the future of the Company."
He said that over the next several weeks employees will be provided full information about the unions and the Company, as well as times and locations for balloting.
"It is important that each employee eligible to vote in this election be fully informed about what it means to have a union and what a union can and cannot do," Kaschub said.
"Our purpose," he added, "is to make sure that each voter can make a fully informed free choice on election day, and we urge all eligible employees to cast a ballot in this important matter.
"I am certain that once our employees have the information about what it would mean to all of us to have a union at PECO," Kaschub concluded, "they will vote to remain union free by voting for neither union on election day."
