PECO COOKS UP ENERGY SAVING TIPS FOR THE HOLIDAYS

PHILADELPHIA, Dec. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- The holidays are just around the corner, so Philadelphia Electric Company (NYSE: PE) (PECO) wants to offer customers ways to save energy, time and money, while preparing holiday meals.
-- Use a microwave -- A microwave oven uses less than half the power of a regular oven and cooks food in one fourth the time.
-- Plan ahead -- Planning meals may allow you to use the oven to cook several dishes at the same time.
-- Be conservative -- Don't use more water than you need to cook. Heating up extra water takes additional time and energy.
-- Be patient -- Don't open the oven door too often to look at the food. Every time you open the oven door, the temperature drops 25 to 50 degrees.
-- Keep food covered -- When cooking, try to keep pans covered as much as possible. Foods heat quicker when covered and may reduce your cooking time.
-- Don't preheat too long -- When baking, time the preheat period carefully. Generally, anything over 10 minutes is a waste of energy.
-- Thaw food first -- Thawed or partially thawed food cooks faster than frozen food. Thawing food will save you time and money.
-- Keep the warmth in -- Turn off the exhaust fan as quickly as possible during cold days. This will help keep the heat inside your home.
-- Let hot food cool -- Before you put leftovers away, make sure the food has cooled. Hot food will make your refrigerator work harder.
-- Use a dishwasher -- If possible, use a dishwasher when you have a full load of dishes. Dishwashers use about 13 gallons of hot water, which is less than washing dishes by hand.
