Byline: Daily News

NEWHALL - Peachland Elementary School elementary school: see school.  received a Title I Academic Achievement Award for being one of 214 public schools statewide that posted gains in the classrooms despite enduring demographic challenges, officials said Tuesday.

The honor, a first for the Newhall School District The Newhall School District is a school district in the Santa Clarita Valley that serves the Valencia and Newhall communities within the city of Santa Clarita, California, as well as the Stevenson Ranch community in unincorporated Los Angeles County.  campus, is a validation of the commitment of teachers, staffers and parents to the pupils, including many from households living in poverty, Principal Brian Skinner Brian Skinner (born May 19 1976 in Temple, Texas) is an American professional basketball player who currently plays for the Phoenix Suns of the NBA. A 6'9", 265 lbs. forward-center from Baylor University, Skinner was selected by the Los Angeles Clippers in the first round (22nd  said.

``It really shows the excellent work that our teachers and support staff have been doing - and the efforts they've put forward - and the growth (the pupils) have achieved.''

Initiated in 1984, the awards program honors high achievers among schools that receive federal Title I funds because of high poverty rates among students' families. The award criteria include demographic and academic assessments.

``These schools, which often face the greatest challenges, should make everyone in the state of California proud of our investment in public education,'' state Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell

said in a statement. ``While they clearly have more work to do, they are beating the odds everyday.''

Just over 40 percent of Peachland's 675 students fell under the poverty criteria, Skinner said.

``There are certain challenges associated with that,'' he said. ``(Title I) helps compensate (for) those extra challenges those students face, and it helps them reach a level of academic success.''

Honors were based on at least two years of assessment data collected under the federal No Child Left Behind Act The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (Public Law 107-110), commonly known as NCLB (IPA: /ˈnɪkəlbiː/), is a United States federal law that was passed in the House of Representatives on May 23, 2001  and the state's Academic Performance Index.

Skinner said Peachland teachers and volunteers supplied many extras for the students, such as help before and after school in a tutoring program.

``It allows teachers to fill in the gaps and build the skills (students) need for classroom success,'' he said. ``No matter what kind of programs you have, without outstanding classroom teachers, you would never have this kind of success.''

The 214 schools will be formally recognized at the 20th annual Title I Academic Achievement Awards Conference, which began Tuesday in San Francisco San Francisco (săn frănsĭs`kō), city (1990 pop. 723,959), coextensive with San Francisco co., W Calif., on the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, which are connected by the strait known as the Golden .
