PEACH BOTTOM EMERGENCY SIREN UPGRADE ENTERS FINAL STAGE
PHILADELPHIA, March 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Philadelphia Electric Company

(NYSE: PE) said today it will begin testing new siren equipment this week as part of a $1.9 million improvement project on the warning sirens located within the Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station emergency planning zone (EPZ).
Craig Adams, PE manager of emergency preparedness, said the improvements are intended to provide better sound and coverage, increased ease of operation for the counties, and for the first time, instantaneous system information, including siren activation status.
The switching and testing is the final stage of the year-long project and should be completed by May 31, 1992. The testing will involve an activation of each siren's motor, which will generate approximately eight seconds of reduced siren noise.
The project included the installation of 20 additional sirens in the perimeter area of the 10-mile EPZ to the 77 existing sirens. Seven of the additional sirens are located in York County, Pa., five are in Lancaster County, Pa., one is in Chester County, Pa., three are in Cecil County, Md., and four are located in Harford County, Md.
Work crews will begin disconnecting the older siren equipment, wiring the new equipment, and conducting operational testing.
The project also included upgrading to the existing sirens with a new, two-way electronic control and monitoring system and new computerized siren controllers in the communication centers of the five counties.
PE said the work was done by ATI Systems, Inc. of Boston, in cooperation with the county emergency management agencies. PE installs and maintains the siren system, but the operation is the responsibility of the county officials.
Nuclear plant operators are required by federal regulations to provide a method to notify the public in the event of an emergency. The sirens are available to the emergency management agencies to assist in other emergency responses as well.
