1 City (1990 pop. 148,134), Maricopa co., S central Ariz., adjacent to Phoenix; inc. 1910. It is located in a rich agricultural region irrigated by the Salt River project. Glendale has become one of the fastest-growing U.S.
 and Burbank Burbank, city (1990 pop. 93,643), Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1911. Tourism and the entertainment industry are central to its economy; several motion-picture studios and television headquarters are here. Burbank's aerospace industry collapsed with the end of the Cold War.  Lions Clubs are sponsoring the 14th annual International Peace Poster Contest for youngsters ages 11 to 13.

Themed Lighting the Path to World Peace, the contest encourages youth to give thought and share their ideas of what peace means to them.

Marva Marva is a program in the Israel Defense Forces that allows young Jews to learn and experience the basics of IDF and Israeli life. Beginning in 1982, Marva operated out of a base in the Galilee, although it now is based at Sde Boker.  Murphy with the Burbank Noon Lions said the contest will be especially poignant in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

``I think it is extremely relevant at this time,'' Murphy said. ``I am hoping it would be a way for children to express their feelings that would not otherwise be spoken in words.''

Burbank middle-schoolers are urged to enter the competition by submitting their original artwork to their school's art teacher or principal by Nov. 9. In Glendale, the local Lions Club is holding the contest only at Columbus Elementary School elementary school: see school. .

Winners will receive savings bonds Savings bond

A government bond issued in face value denominations from $50 to $10,000, with local and state tax-free interest and semiannually adjusted interest rates.

A nonmarketable security issued by the U.S.
 and their artwork will be submitted for regional and, potentially, national and international competitions.

The international grand prize winner will receive $2,500 and other winners will receive $500 each. The awards will be announced in February.
