PE REPORTS RECORD NUCLEAR OUTPUT FOR 1991
PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Philadelphia Electric Company

(NYSE: PE) said today that 1991 was another record year for its nuclear power generation.
The company reported that nuclear output reached 25.735 billion kilowatt-hours (kwh) of electricity in 1991, an increase of 8.5 percent over the old record, 23.715 billion kwh, set last year.
The record nuclear generation enabled PE to set an overall output record of 40.867 billion kwh in 1991, topping the 40 billion kwh mark for the first time. In 1990, the company generated 36.640 billion kwh.
Nuclear generation accounted for 63 percent of the company's 1991 output. Coal accounted for 16 percent, oil and hydro power 2 percent each, and 17 percent was purchased through Pennsylvania-New Jersey- Maryland Interconnection (PJM) and from utilities outside PJM.
Joseph F. Paquette Jr., PE chairman and chief executive officer, said the cost to produce 25.7 billion kwh of power through nuclear fuel was some $680 million less than it would have been to generate through the use of oil.
Paquette said PE's high nuclear output was due to the continued good performance of its six nuclear reactors, particularly the two it owns and operates at the Limerick Generating Station in Montgomery County, Pa.
Overall, PE's nuclear reactors operated at 75 percent of full capacity, well above the industry average. Limerick's two units operated at a combined capacity factor of 83 percent, generating more than 15 billion kwh of electricity, almost 40 percent of the company's entire output.
PE also operates and partially owns two nuclear units at its Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station in York County, Pa., and it partially owns two units at the Salem Generation Station in New Jersey, operated by the Public Service Electric and Gas Co.
