PE Applied Biosystems enters genetic animal testing market with acquisition of Zoogen, Inc.; Davis, Calif.-based firm is premier provider of genetic analysis services to animal breeders and owners.

A genetic test examines the genetic information contained inside a person's cells, called DNA, to determine if that person has or will develop a certain disease or could pass a disease to his or her offspring.
 services market through the acquisition of Zoogen, Inc., a leading purveyor of genetic analysis services to breeders and owners of domestic, exotic and farm animal species.

PE Applied Biosystems is the world's leading manufacturer and developer of genetic analysis technology. Zoogen, based in Davis, California, provides animal breeders and owners with a range of services, including parentage PARENTAGE. Kindred. Vide 2 Bouv. Inst. n. 1955; Branch; Line.  and avian sex testing, genetic screening and breeding consultation services. Zoogen has approximately 20 employees.

Zoogen will become a business unit operated within PE Applied Biosystems and will be called PE Zoogen. Joy Halverson, founder of Zoogen and its head of research and development, will continue in that role. Mike Miille, Chief Executive of Zoogen, will continue to run day-to-day operations.

Zoogen was founded in 1989 with a core technology transferred from the University of California The University of California has a combined student body of more than 191,000 students, over 1,340,000 living alumni, and a combined systemwide and campus endowment of just over $7.3 billion (8th largest in the United States).  at Davis.
