PE ANNOUNCES HURRICANE RELIEF AID INCLUDING PHILADELPHIA AIRLIFT
PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Philadelphia Electric Company (NYSE: PE) announced today it is joining the massive relief effort for hurricane victims in Florida.
The company is sending electric generators to Dade County, Fla., one of the areas hardest hit by Hurricane Andrew and has started a company- wide fundraising effort.
A three-ton, 100-kilowatt (kw) diesel-powered generator and four smaller generators are being sent to the Metro Dade County Fire Department to assist in their relief efforts. The 100-kw generator will produce enough electricity for a large emergency shelter. The smaller generators run on gasoline and can be moved to different locations as needed.
PE employees are also responding through a volunteer effort to raise money for hurricane victims. The company's 200 American Red Cross volunteers will be helping in the collection effort today and Tuesday, Sept. 8. The money will then be distributed as needed through the Red Cross.
PE President Corbin A. McNeill Jr. said that in addition to raising money, sending generators is one area where PE can help. McNeill said, "We know what it's like to have our system damaged by severe weather. But, Hurricane Andrew was so destructive many thousands of people will be without electricity for weeks to come, and our generators can provide some of the critically needed electricity for relief shelters".
The generators will travel to Miami today, along with a Communications Command Center and other supplies in an Air National Guard C-5 cargo plane leaving from Philadelphia International Airport. This relief effort was arranged by U.S. Rep. Curt Weldon of the 7th District of Pennsylvania.
Lee Fulton, a PE Eddystone Generating Station employee in Delaware County helped organize PE's effort. Fulton and Weldon have both been firefighters in Delaware County. Fulton is also Chief Fire Marshal in Springfield, Delaware County. Fulton said, "As an emergency responder, I tried to think of what I would need in this type of disaster. A generator is one of the first things you need to help a large number of people without electricity."
