PCTEL Receives Critical Roaming Patent.


New Patent Protects Software That Enables Wireless Roaming Across Local and Wide Area Networks

The patent describes the techniques for both automatic and manual switching of data and voice calls from one network type to another. PCTEL was the first company to market a multi-mode Roaming Client that enabled this functionality. PCTEL had previously announced that the USPTO had communicated its intention to grant the patent. Official notification was provided on November 7, 2006.

The patent (U.S. 7,133,669) is entitled, Systems and Methods for Seamless Roaming Between Wireless Networks, and is briefly described as a technique for the seamless switching of a wireless device between wireless wide area networks (WWANs) and wireless local area networks (WLANs) that includes automatically detecting the available WWANs and WLANs, selecting one of the available networks for use by the wireless device and connecting the wireless device to the selected network.
