The issue of race has always been a complex and divisive one in the U.S., and is deeply woven into the fabric of American life. Throughout history, scientists, philosophers, educators, and others have made assumptions about people based on race. It has also been fundamental to discussions and debates about poverty, education, crime, music, sports, and more. Despite this, some anthropologists, biologists, and geneticists ge·net·i·cist (j -n t -s question the biological existence of "race." In the end, we are left with many questions about race. A new PBS documentary, Race--The Power of an Illusion, asks even more questions, but the series also attempts to examine race through science, history, and our nation's social institutions. Narrated by actress CCH Pounder, the three-part series will air from 10 to 11 p.m. on April 24, May 1, and May 8 (check local listings).
