PB to manage construction of 2nd Ave. subway phase.


The MTA Capital Construction MTA Capital Construction was formed in July 2003 to manage major capital projects for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (New York) in New York, USA. It mainly focuses on improving transportation infrastructure and facilities in the New York City, upstate New York, and Long  Company has awarded a contract to PB to provide construction management services for the first phase of the Second Avenue Subway subway: see rapid transit.

Overall, the Second Avenue Subway will include a two-track line along Second Avenue from 125th Street to the Financial District in Lower Manhattan Lower Manhattan is the southernmost part of the island of Manhattan, the main island and center of business and government of the City of New York. Lower Manhattan is generally defined as the area delineated on the north by Chambers Street, on the west by the Hudson River (North . It will also include a connection to existing subway lines. Sixteen new stations will be constructed.

Phase 1 of the project involves construction of twin tunnels from 96th Street to 63rd Street. A tunnel boring machine Tunnel boring machines (TBM) excavate tunnels with a circular cross section through a variety of geologies. They can be used to bore through hard rock or sand and almost anything in between. Tunnel diameters can range from a metre (done with micro-TBMs) to 15 metres.  will bore one tunnel tunnel, underground passage usually made without removing the overlying rock or soil. Although tunnels are approximately horizontal, they must be built with sufficient gradient for proper drainage.  from 96th to 63rd streets and a second tunnel from 96th to 72nd streets. The remainder of the second tunnel from 72nd to 63rd streets will be constructed using the drill-and-blast method. Three new stations will be constructed and the rehab of the 63rd Street station will enable the new line to connect to existing service. This project phase also entails the launch box for the tunnel boring machines, two access shafts, and installation/integration of all systems components. Construction of phase one is scheduled for completion in 2013.
