PB Selects Intermap Technologies' 3D Elevation Models for California High-Speed Train Project.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. & DENVER -- The California High-Speed Rail The California High-Speed Rail project is a proposed high-speed rail system in the state of California. The system is being planned by the California High-Speed Rail Authority, which will design, build, and operate the system.  Authority (CHSRA CHSRA California High Speed Rail Authority (Sacramento, CA)
CHSRA Center for Health Systems Research and Analysis
) today announced that PB, acting on behalf of the Authority, has chosen Intermap Technologies(TM) Corp's NEXTMap([R]) 3D digital elevation models as the preferred GIS mapping datasets to assist in the design of the high-speed rail High-speed rail is a type of passenger rail transport that operates significantly faster than the normal speed of rail traffic. Specific definitions include 200-320 km/h (125-200 mph) - depending on whether the track is upgraded or new - by the European Union and above 90 mph  system linking northern and southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, .

PB is the program manager for the California High Speed Train Project (CHSTP). Intermap's highly accurate and cost-effective elevation models, based on its proprietary Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar Synthetic aperture radar (SAR)

Radar, airborne or satellite-borne, that uses special signal processing to produce high-resolution images of the surface of the Earth (or another object) while traversing a considerable flight path.
(IFSAR IFSAR Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar ) technology, will be used by the regional consultant teams under contract with CHSRA to perform preliminary environmental planning Environmental planning is a relatively new field of study that aims to merge the practice of urban planning with the concerns of environmentalism. Essentially speaking, while urban planners have traditionally factored in economic development, transportation, sanitation, and other  and engineering work on the project.

Established in 1996, the CHSRA is chartered to plan, design, construct, and operate a state-of-the-art high-speed train system that stretches from San Francisco San Francisco (săn frănsĭs`kō), city (1990 pop. 723,959), coextensive with San Francisco co., W Calif., on the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, which are connected by the strait known as the Golden , Oakland, and Sacramento in the north, through the Central Valley, to Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  and San Diego San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. San Diego includes the unincorporated communities of La Jolla and Spring Valley. Coronado is across the bay.  in the south. With bullet trains operating at speeds up to 220 mph, the express travel time from downtown San Francisco to Los Angeles will be approximately 2 1/2 hours. Intercity travelers (trips between metropolitan regions) along with longer-distance commuters would enjoy the benefits of a system designed to connect with existing rail, air, and highway systems.

Under the terms of the agreement, preliminary engineering and design, project-level environmental studies, and right-of-way preservation analyses will be based on Intermap's high-resolution elevation data. The Company has already delivered datasets to several of PB's authorized regional consultants (ARC), and will continue to supply data to other contractors throughout various stages of the project. Intermap datasets available to PB and its regional consultants include digital terrain models, digital surface models, and orthorectified radar images.

"The planning stage requires the use of mapping data that is more current and reliable than existing USGS USGS United States Geological Survey (US Department of the Interior)  data, and considerably less expensive than a custom fly project," said Tony Daniels, CHSTP Program Manager. "Intermap's NEXTMap([R]) datasets fit the project accuracy needs perfectly and the immediate availability of the product was a major factor in selecting NEXTMap([R]) as the preferred data tool for the regional consultant teams under contract working on the project."

Mehdi Morshed, CHSRA Director, "the ability to easily export NEXTMap([R]) data into existing CAD applications is an incredible time-saver for our contractors, allowing all of the regional consultant teams to work independently but also to share data and work collaboratively." Likewise, Garth Lawrence, Intermap's senior vice president of operations, said, "The Intermap executive team is both thrilled and proud that the Company's wide-area NEXTMap([R]) dataset has already enabled the various entities involved in this project to seamlessly connect with each other. Knowing we are aiding some of the geospatial industry's sharpest engineering minds in their quest to deliver a safe, cost-efficient, and environmentally favorable high-speed train system, the likes of which has never been attempted in the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The Company is proactively remapping entire countries and building unprecedented national databases, called NEXTMap([R]), consisting of highly accurate digital geometric maps that include elevation data.

Demand for NEXTMap([R]) data is growing as new commercial applications are emerging, including geographical information systems (GIS), engineering planning, transportation, automotive, navigation, flood, irrigation irrigation, in agriculture, artificial watering of the land. Although used chiefly in regions with annual rainfall of less than 20 in. (51 cm), it is also used in wetter areas to grow certain crops, e.g., rice. , environmental management and planning, telecommunications/wireless network planning, aviation, simulation, and 3D visualization. Internet applications include virtual tours, topographic maps, and computer games. Datasets are also used to add interactive intelligence to airborne and satellite imagery.

Headquartered in Denver, Colorado, Intermap employs more than 425 people worldwide, with additional offices in Calgary, Detroit, Jakarta, London, Munich, Ottawa, and Prague. For more information, visit www.Intermap.com.
