PAY'N SAVE PARENT ANNOUNCES INTENT TO SELL RETAIL
 AND OTHER BUSINESSES
SEATTLE, Feb. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- The following was released today by Pay'n Save Drug Stores, Inc.:
Pay'n Save's parent company announced Tuesday that certain of its retailing operations, including Pay'n Save, are being offered for sale.
Pay'n Save, the number one drug retailer in the Pacific Northwest, is operating profitably and has been profitable since 1988. The proposed sale is intended to reduce debt and improve the liquidity of the parent company, Pacific Enterprises (NYSE: PET), a utility, retail and oil and gas holding company. Pacific Enterprises also announced its intent to divest itself of its oil and gas exploration and production business. Pay'n Save operates as part of Pacific Enterprises' retailing subsidiary, Thrifty Corp. of California.
"The announcement is a notice of intent to sell the company, a process that could take some time," said Richard Dortch, president, Pay'n Save Drug Stores, Inc.
Pay'n Save stores are operating on a "business as usual" basis, said Dortch, emphasizing that customers will experience no difference in their day-to-day shopping at the stores. Stores are fully stocked and staffed as usual. Hours remain the same.
Meetings with employees to discuss and explain the announcement began Tuesday afternoon.
Pay'n Save employs approximately 5,000 people in 124 stores in Washington, Idaho, Alaska and Hawaii. (Employee meetings in Hawaii are being conducted by local executives there.)
