PAUL MACE LAUNCHES PC COMIX INC., SHIPS FIRST EDITION OF HYPERCOMIX

PC-Based Electronic Comic Books Feature Color Graphics, Spot Animation,
Sound Effects and Multi-Threaded, Branching Plot Lines
ASHLAND, Ore., Feb. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Paul Mace, president and co- founder of Paul Mace Software, publishers of GRasp (GRaphic Animation System for Professionals), animation-based multimedia software for DOS PCs, today announced the formation of a new company, PC Comix Inc. chartered to develop, publish and market a new family of electronic comic books; HyperComix(TM). Lance Stone(TM), the first edition of the company's first comic series, will ship on March 2, 1992.
HyperComix are distinguished by: spot animation; selective sound effects; and, branching plot lines such that the reader can follow the action from selectable points of view -- branching or returning to the main story line with the click of the mouse. Subsequent editions of Lance Stone and other series in the HyperComix line will recognize the presence of earlier issue numbers on a user's hard disk, and will automatically link to form ongoing books. HyperComix editions are DOS-based, require VGA graphics capabilities (color or gray scale on laptops), 640K RAM and occupy 2MB of hard disk space. HyperComix sound effects are designed to play back clearly through the PC's internal speaker. For better sound quality, company officials recommend using a PC sound board like the SoundBlaster Audio Board from Creative Labs Inc.
"These electronic comics are the next generational step in the evolution of comic book art and literature," said Mace, co-founder and editor in chief of PC Comix Inc. "We've been careful not to alter the basics of this all-American form of art and young people's literature. Customers will know immediately that they are looking at a comic book but the sound track, spot animation, and HyperComix interface add new dimensions to the experience."
PC Comix Inc., a privately held Oregon corporation, will operate out of the Mace building in Ashland, sharing facilities with Paul Mace Software. Kathleen Kahle, currently vice president and chief financial officer of Paul Mace Software, will take the additional titles of president and chief financial officer of PC Comix Inc.
Doug Zeffer, co-founder and former vice president of the GRAFX Group in San Juan Capistrano, Calif., has been named creative director of the newly formed company. He will be moving to Ashland from Southern California in March 1992. Zeffer is the creator and author of the Lance Stone series. Zeffer has more than 10 years experience in the computer graphics market, as an artist, entrepreneur and business executive. He is responsible for a number of the most elaborate and well-received computer animations in the industry.
PC Comix Inc. plans to establish market presence and penetration with the Lance Stone editions, then follow up with a number of other planned series based on a variety of superheroes in a variety of settings. The company plans to sell direct, through appropriate catalogs and ultimately through distributors that handle book stores, mass merchants and electronic products.
PC users with VGA capabilities who are members of the CompuServe Information System can download a sample of the Lance Stone Series in the comics forum (GO COMICS).
Lance Stone has a 90-day introductory price of $20. Until mass distribution channels are in place, customers may order HyperComix editions direct from PC Comix at: 800-944-0181. PC Comix Inc. is located at 400 Williamson Way, Ashland, OR 97520. The company can be reached at 503-488-3727.
