PAUL KOZLOWSKI, CONTEL CELLULAR FOUNDER, TO HEAD DIGITAL EQUIPMENT BUSINESS UNIT

MAYNARD, Mass., Jan. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Digital Equipment Corporation (NYSE: DEC) today announced that Paul G. Kozlowski will join the company as Vice President of its Communication, Education and Entertainment Business Unit. The unit is one of nine new business groups announced on December 22nd by Digital President and Chief Executive Officer Robert B. Palmer.
Today's announcement is another in a recent series of appointments of outside executives to senior positions as part of the company's goals to become more customer focused and to return to profitable growth. Kozlowski, 54, has more than 25 years of technical, managerial and executive experience in the telecommunications industry. In 1982 he founded Contel Cellular, Inc., and, in 1991, successfully led its merger with GTE Mobile Communication, which he served as President. This is the country's second largest cellular telephone operation.
"Some of our fastest growing worldwide markets are represented in the business unit that Paul will head," said Palmer. "He brings to us the ideal blend of entrepreneurial drive, a successful managerial record and a demonstrable customer focus to meet this challenge."
As Vice President, Kozlowski will be responsible for achieving and sustaining industry-leading growth and profitability for Digital with customers in the communications, education, entertainment, cable television and other media markets.
His appointment at Digital is effective immediately. Commenting on his new position, Kozlowski said, "This is an excellent time to join Digital, which is committed to a new direction in the marketplace that will move the company closer to understanding and satisfying the customer. Digital is well positioned to become the preferred worldwide supplier to these high growth markets with quality products and services that make the customer more competitive."
Kozlowski joined Atlanta-based Contel in 1980, becoming President of the Communications Sector in 1989. Contel Cellular grew to $325 million in revenue before it was merged with GTE. Prior to joining Contel, he served in various strategic planning, engineering and marketing positions with General Motors and the Rochester Telephone Corporation.
Kozlowski holds an engineering degree from the General Motors Engineering and Management Institute. He is a past chairman of the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association, a member of the Atlanta Advanced Technology Development Institute and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
