SANTA CLARITA - The local California Highway Patrol station has increased patrols on area freeways in response to the recent spate of freeway shootings plaguing the region, authorities said.

The CHP's Newhall station on Wednesday increased daily patrols by four officers per shift. The station had already planned to increase DUI patrols leading up to the Memorial Day weekend, but that increase would have been on a smaller scale.

``These increases will go through the end of May,'' CHP Officer Wendy Hahn said. ``We had already planned an increase for DUIs, but not this many. The increase will be re-evaluated'' based on any additional freeway shootings.

Hahn didn't say how many of the increased patrols were related to the freeway shootings or how many additional patrols had previously been planned to target holiday drunken drivers.

Four people have been killed on Southern California freeways in recent weeks in at least a dozen car-to-car shootings. Authorities have not confirmed whether the shootings are related or if they are the result of individual incidents of road rage See Web rage..

Hahn and other CHP officers responded last week to the northbound Antelope Valley Freeway at Interstate 5, where the driver of a sport utility vehicle called 911 after one of his windows was shattered by what appeared to be a gunshot.

No arrests have been made in that incident.
