PATROL FOILS BURGLARY AT CANYON LIQUOR.

CANYON COUNTRY -- A sheriff's patrol foiled a liquor store burglary early Saturday, arresting a man trying to escape with about $700 worth of cigarettes.

Nicholas Escarcega, 23, was arrested about 3 a.m. near Canyon Liquor in the 16500 block of Soledad Canyon Soledad Canyon is a long narrow canyon / valley located in Los Angeles County, California between the cities of Palmdale and Santa Clarita. Soledad Canyon contains the localities of Vincent, Acton, Ravenna, and Agua Dulce.  Road at Sand Canyon Road. He was being held in lieu of $20,000 bail.

Sheriff's Sgt. Byron Wainie said witnesses saw a man smash a store window with a hammer and begin loading cartons of cigarettes into a shopping cart.

The witness then flagged down sheriff's Lt. Stephan Low, who was patrolling the area, Wainie said.

``He was trying to hide,'' Wainie said. ``(Low) located the guy, then arrested him.''

The county sheriff's bomb squad responded to a call at the same liquor store about a month ago when deputies found a suspicious device with protruding pro·trude
