PATRIOTS TURN IT AROUND BIRMINGHAM RALLIES FOR WIN BEHIND KNOX BIRMINGHAM 35, VALENCIA 21.

For Milton Knox and Birmingham High, it was gut-check time.

Losers in the first two weeks of the season, the Patriots were passed on at will in the first half by Valencia quarterback Graham Wilbert, and looked like a beaten and dejected de·ject·ed

 room at halftime.

But what a difference a half can make.

Knox, Birmingham's standout junior running back, broke a 45-yard touchdown run on the opening drive of the second half and the Patriots never looked back, dominating the Vikings on both sides of the ball in the second half for a 35-21 come-from-behind victory Friday night at Birmingham High.

``This win was all heart,'' said Knox, who finished with 181 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries despite being stifled sti·fle 1

``We found a way to motivate ourselves at halftime, and we were convinced we were going to come out in the second half and take control.''

Birmingham (1-2), ranked No. 8 in the area by the Daily News, trailed 14-0 in the first quarter and 21-14 at halftime, mainly because of Wilbert, who was 19 of 28 for 259 yards and two touchdowns in the first half alone.

But the Vikings (1-2), ranked No.11, were a shadow of themselves in the second half. Wilbert was sacked sack 1

Cal-bound Vikings running back Shane Vereen had 19 yards rushing on 10 carries despite catching five passes for 72 yards.

Receiver Nicholas Hale added game-highs of eight receptions and 134 yards for Valencia, while Wilbert finished 23 of 38 with 343 yards and an interception.
