PATRICK GAGE, PH.D. TO BECOME GENETICS INSTITUTE'S CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER; OTHER OFFICERS APPOINTED

 CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Nov. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Genetics Institute, Inc. (NASDAQ: GENIZ) today announced the appointment of Patrick Gage, Ph.D. to the newly created position of chief operating officer (COO). In this capacity, Dr. Gage will have full responsibility for the daily operations of the company, and will report to Gabriel Schmergel, president and chief executive officer.
 Gage joined Genetics Institute as senior vice president, Scientific Affairs, in November 1989. In January 1990 he assumed the position of executive vice president with management responsibility in the areas of discovery research, process development, clinical development, technical affairs and regulatory affairs. Prior to joining Genetics Institute, Gage served for 18 years at Hoffmann-La Roche Inc. in various scientific and management assignments, including vice president and director, Exploratory Research in which he was responsible for all of Roche's U.S. drug discovery efforts.

 In addition to Gage's appointment as COO, Steven C. Clark, Ph.D. is being
promoted to senior vice president, Discovery Research. Dale


Blank is being promoted to vice president, Facilities and Technical Services. John Knopf, Ph.D. is being promoted to vice president, Small Molecule Drug Discovery, and Jack Morgan is being promoted to vice president, Corporate Development.
 Clark joined the Company in March 1981 as one of the founding scientists. He has been serving as vice president, Research since April 1989. Blank joined the Company in August 1986. She has been director, Facilities and Technical Services since November 1988 where she now directs a large staff responsible for maintaining the company's facilities and for providing other technical services. Knopf joined the company as a staff scientist in February 1982. He has been director of the company's Small Molecule Drug Discovery group since June 1992. Morgan joined the company as director, Corporate Development in April 1991. Prior to joining the company, he spent 12 years at Baxter Healthcare Corporation where, among other responsibilities, he was vice president of Corporate Planning.
