A new feature on an old Web site lets you know how a quoted hotel rate compares with previous rates at the same hotel. Rates are graded "not a deal," "average" or a "deal" based on how much the nightly fee is above or below past rates.

Farecast.com is testing out the new tool, which has some drawbacks. A decent rate could come up as "not a deal" if the hotel in question is predicting a particularly busy night and has raised rates. The site does not compare rates to those at hotels of similar caliber, so you could be left in the dark about a competitor.
