PARTY PLANNERS EXPLOITED NET IN PROMOTING EVENT.

Byline: Phillip W. Browne Staff Writer

Harnessing the enormous power of the Internet, promoters of the JuJuBeats rave party at Snowcrest ski resort promised a ``collective, peaceful vibe'' - the last all-night rave party before school started.

At least 5,000 teen-agers and young adults got the message and attended, not an unusual number for JuJuBeats, which has gained momentum in the rave subculture subculture /sub·cul·ture/ (sub´kul-chur) a culture of bacteria derived from another culture.

Like other large rave producers, JuJuBeats' promoters B3/Cande used the Internet to boost promotion and build its reputation, reaching partygoers across state and international borders through the Worldwide Web.

``Fliers are still the main way they promote raves, but tons of people find out about them through the Internet now,'' said 18-year-old Web site designer Mark Chavez Mark "Marky" Anthony Chavez (born November 15 1978) is an American-born singer of Mexican descent. He was the lead singer for rock band Midnight Panic and is best known as the former lead singer for Alternative Rock band Adema. , who attends raves across Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, .

``They post pictures from raves and reviews on the Web sites to build up their reputation.

``JuJuBeats has gotten pretty big, but there's a lot bigger raves out there where they get, like, 20,000 or more people,'' Chavez said. ``Being on the Internet has helped that.''

The JuJuBeats Web site opens with animated bumble bees Bumble bees can mean:

Visitors to the site can buy T-shirts and listen to audio clips with a credit card. Ravers were able to buy JuJuBeats tickets through the Web site, or at ``pay points'' on the day of the event.

As is common with raves, the mystery and buzz was amplified a day before the event when promoters released six phone numbers to other rave calendar Web sites, which gave detailed directions to several pay points.

At those phone numbers, the voice message even gave directions for people coming from Nevada and Arizona. The promoter's message suggested that partygoers carpool car·pool

Only at this point did partygoers know they were headed to Snowcrest, at Kratka Ridge Kratka Ridge or Snowcrest is a skiable area on Waterman Mountain in the San Gabriel Mountains of Los Angeles County, California. Representatives from B3/Cande could not be reached for comment.

The Invasion Family, the host of a competing rave party that was shut down that night by police, sent condolences.

``We want to give much love and respect to the five people who died this week coming back from JuJuBeats,'' said a phone message for the rave promoters. ``These were five people who helped create this culture that we have.''
