PARTY LINES FIRST LADY SPEAKS OUT FOR WOMEN.

Byline: Barbara De Witt

Hillary Clinton was in town, but she wasn't wearing her politico's hat.

Instead, she dressed to the nines in an elegant black gown and was honored with the Women of Courage Award by Cedars-Sinai Medical Center Cedars-Sinai Medical Center is a world-renowned hospital located in Los Angeles, California. History
Cedars-Sinai is the result of a merger in 1961 between two major Los Angeles hospitals, Cedars of Lebanon and Mount Sinai Home for the Incurables, with Steve Broidy as
at a big deal gala at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills.

More than 850 guests attended the affair that was lavishly decorated with pink and coral organza or·gan·za

tablecloths over silk and accented with huge frosted cylinders of magenta flowers from Sherman Oaks florist Mark's Garden. The hotel provided silver chairs that coordinated with the silver boxes stuffed with party favors such as Gucci sunglasses, CDs, candles, towels, beach bags and a hair dryer.

After the filet mignon with port wine sauce, guests got another box, this time made of chocolate by Spago and filled with chocolate mousse and raspberries.

Up on the stage, Elton John sang several of his favorite songs, including ``Daniel'' and ``That's Why They Call It the Blues.'' Robin Williams acted as master of ceremonies, and Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg had the honor of presenting the Tiffany crystal award to the first lady for her efforts in the field of women's cancers. Hanks and Spielberg mentioned Mrs. Clinton's efforts, including the Medicare mammography mammography, diagnostic procedure that uses low-dose X rays to detect abnormalities in the breasts. The early diagnosis of breast cancer made possible by the routine use of mammography for screening women increases a woman's treatment alternatives and improves her  campaign.

Since it was already a long night, Mrs. Clinton graciously kept her speech short (and non-political) and praised the work at Cedars-Sinai Research for Women's Cancers in Los Angeles.

The event raised more than $1.4 million dollars for Cedars-Sinai, and was completely underwritten by Saks Fifth Avenue Saks Fifth Avenue is a chain of upscale American department stores that is owned and operated by Saks Fifth Avenue Enterprises (SFAE), a subsidiary of Saks Incorporated. It competes in the elite luxury department store market with Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman and Barneys New .

At another Cedars-Sinai benefit, members of the medical center's Cheerful Helpers for Children With Special Needs were honored at a dinner dance at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. The organization has contributed $2 million to support the preschool at Cedars-Sinai's Thalians Mental Health Center.

The Ark Trust's Genesis Awards gala was another star-studded affair that attracted 1,000 people (where were the fire marshals?) to the Beverly Hilton ballroom in Beverly Hills.

It's hoped that the reason for the incredible turnout was the Ark Trust's work for animal rights, but The Artist formerly known as Prince was a major draw.

According to Ark Trust creator Gretchen Wyler of Van Nuys, he was presented the Dolly Green Special Achievement Award for his new recording ``Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic'' that decries the suffering of sheep to produce wool clothing.

As he received the award during a standing ovation, he said, ``I've received many awards, but I'm truly humbled just to be here ... there are so many wonderful people in the room.''

They helped hand out 23 awards for entertainment spotlighting animal issues, including the films ``Instinct,'' ``The Iron Giant'' and ``Animal Farm,'' and TV shows ``Judging Amy,'' ``Popular'' and ``Leeza.''

Among the celebs in attendance were James Cromwell, Frances Fisher, Kelsey Grammer, Valerie Harper, Tippi Hedren, Alan Rachins, Doris Roberts, Susan Sullivan, Concetta Tomei and Frankie Muniz of the new TV show ``Malcom in the Middle.''

The event was underwritten in part by Culinary Revolution, PetsMart and Turner Network Television Turner Network Television, usually referred to as TNT, is an American cable TV network created by media mogul Ted Turner and currently owned by the Turner Broadcasting System division of Time Warner. , and will be aired on Animal Planet at 6 and 9 p.m. June 10.

If there was an award for attending the most parties (like Debutante of the Year), ``Frasier'' star David Hyde Pierce would certainly be the winner this month. Besides his other galas, Hyde Pierce was at the Night at Sardi's gala at the Regent Beverly Wilshire to present actor Mike Myers with the Elsa Rose Fabares Award named after actress Shelley Fabares' late mother, for his contributions to fighting Alzheimer's disease Alzheimer's disease (ăls`hī'mərz, ôls–), degenerative disease of nerve cells in the cerebral cortex that leads to atrophy of the brain and senile dementia. . When receiving the award, Myers said he was dedicating the award to his mother, whom he described as his true hero.

Also honored were Soichi Matsuno of the Eisai Inc. pharmaceutical company; Marian Broome, co-chairman of the Alzheimer's Association's Dementia Care Network; and the NBC NBC

The event was a fund-raiser for the Alzheimer's Association of Los Angeles, and it raised $600,000 to be used in finding a cure for the disease.

The Sherman Oaks-based Children's Burn Foundation raised $500,000 for its programs at its fifth annual Giving New Hope dinner at the Beverly Hilton and honored Tommy Hawkins for his dedication to the betterment of our youth.
